An Image and a Lesson

This is one of the guest bathrooms in an apartment I just finished on Central Park. When I say “I finished,” it feels absurd – so many people devoted their talents to this project it hardly makes sense to think of it as other than a massive collaboration.

But this room, in particular, stands out due to the talents of the stone craftsmen, a team from Ionian Marble led by the owner, Mike Engilis.

Mike is old school: absolutely no online presence, no promotion of his company, just a couple of mentions on Yelp.

Sometimes, it’s striking that even in today’s connected world,  you have to work to hunt down and find the most extraordinary talents in their craft. The story of how Mike Engilis and his team added quality and depth to the project, showing that even in today’s digital age, some of the finest work comes from those who prioritize skill and quality over self-promotion or any online presence.
